Become an ACR&S Foster Home

Want a bunny or guinea pig, but not quite ready to take the plunge? Want to get to know a few animals before choosing who you adopt? Be a foster home!

ACR&S provides cages and medical care - you provide food, bedding, and love!

Fostering allows you to meet, interact with, and experience the companionship of a guinea pig or rabbit without the total commitment of adoption. In addition, you are helping ACR&S and the animal by providing much needed one-on-one attention! Fostering helps us make them better, more adoptable pets and improves their chances of finding a forever home.

Foster Guidelines:

#1 Prior experience with the species you wish to foster is desirable but not required. We will educate you about the needs of your foster animal and encourage you to join one of the mailing lists for more information.

#2 You must feed specific foods and brands approved by us. For bunnies and guinea pigs, we feed Oxbow pellets and Oxbow timothy hay. You must also provide fresh veggies daily. Care sheets with species-specific diets will be provided.

#3 You must use an approved bedding or litter such as Aspen, Yesterday's News, CareFresh, and Cell-Sorb. No pine or cedar is allowed.

#4 You will not be held responsible for any medical bills, provided you use our approved regular and emergency veterinarians. You are encouraged to seek medical attention as needed, especially for emergencies, but you must contact us ASAP when a foster animal needs medical attention so that we can discuss medical history and treatment options with the vet.

#5 We make scheduled monthly home checks to provide basic health maintenance (nail trims, weighing, and pouch/ear cleaning).

#6 Fostered animals are not allowed to be housed with or play with any other animals in the home. This is to prevent disease transmission, accidental pregnancies, and injuries.

#7 We provide cages. If you choose to build or use a cage of your own, we have to see and pre-approve it.

#8 We require an application, a veterinary reference and a home check before fostering is approved.

#9 If you later decide to adopt your foster animal, you may be required to pay an adoption fee.
